First jumping spider? Start here.

A guided path from “should I get one?” to species choice, day-one supplies, and checkout.

Step 1

Is a jumping spider right for me?

Jumping spiders are one of the easiest spider pets to start with — but they are still a commitment. Here is an honest snapshot before you buy.

Small footprint

A single adult needs only a small vertical enclosure — great for apartments and desks.

Active & curious

They are active during the day and fun to watch. Many owners say each spider has its own personality.

Simple feeding

Juveniles eat fruit flies. No daily dog-walks — mist a few times a week and feed every 2–4 days.

Know the tradeoffs

Lifespan is typically 1–2 years. They are observational pets, not cuddly companions.

Good fit if you want

A low-space, low-noise pet you can watch during the day, with straightforward care and minimal equipment. Not ideal if you need a long-lived pet or hands-on handling every day.

Step 2

Best beginner species

We recommend starting with tough, friendly species we breed ourselves — regal jumping spiders (Phidippus regius) or Arizona jumpers (P. arizonensis). The options below are forgiving for first-time owners.

Step 3

What you need on day one

Have these ready before your spider arrives. Jumpers do not need bedding on the floor — a simple enclosure with something to climb is enough.

Enclosure with ventilation

Minimum 3×3×6 inches, secure lid, and air holes on different sides so air can flow. Jumpers climb and escape easily.

A perch to climb

Cork bark or a branch gives your jumper a place to climb, perch, and anchor a web.

Misting routine

Light mist on one wall 2–3 times per week. No heat lamp required for most household temps.

Fruit flies and/or buffalo beetle larvae

Small young spiders eat flightless fruit flies. Larger ones can eat buffalo beetle larvae (a type of small mealworm). Have food ready before your spider arrives.
